The silence of a city with no night life and no culture is, quite simply, deafening. Fun, night bird get-togethers and informal encounters with our guests are all part of the Black Movie Festival's DNA. So… restricted by the Covid-19 pandemic and in solidarity with Geneva's cultural night spots severely impacted by “sanitary” policies that, because their application is unfair, are incomprehensible, we want to reach out to the structures more than tested by this crisis.
Every Festival night, you will find – here – livestreamings specially designed for the occasion, dreamt up with passion by the Audio Club, Bongo Joe, Chez Jean-Luc, le Rez - Usine, Urgence Disk and Motel Campo. As for Cave 12, they're offering a special Lockdown soundtrack.
Founded in November 2017 in a disaffected silkscreen printing factory in the Acacias neighborhood, Audio rapidly became the new temple of Geneva's underground electronic scene. With its design and interior impeccably groomed for optimal reception of the public, a sound system capable of producing perfectly tuned acoustics and, above all, its irreproachable and increasingly adventurous programming, this is now THE unavoidable French-speaking Switzerland's clubbing place. A must-visit for all aficionados of professional electronic music!
Bongo Joe was founded in 2013 to fulfill its members' wish to create a musical platform via the purchase and sale of records, and the organization of concerts, DJ sets and conferences. The venue offers a varied musical selection: world music, soul, funk, jazz, disco, rock, garage, psychedelic, folk, blues, electro, hip-hop, house and techno. The association is also a label that recalls the past (re-editions) and the present (contemporary groups, Swiss and international). Bongo Joe Records explore current and underground scenes, recording instruments, voices or machines. It also digs deep down timewise to extract gold nuggets, from here or further afield.
Underneath Geneva's Old Town, discover our underground mystery cabaret with Pandora. A mythical place, bewitching, that will awaken your senses. Taste first of all as you sample our cocktails and snacks. Then your ears as they tune in to our dazzling, spinning sounds. And finally, your eyes, hesitating between reality and dream, will begin to see a shimmering, mysterious universe. Have we awakened your curiosity and famous energy? Come and be enthralled. With heart and mind open, whoever you are, you'll always be welcome. Here, you'll never be alone because you'll be with us... and the party spirit.
In just seven years, La Gravière has become the not-to-be-missed venue on Geneva's and French-speaking Switzerland's cultural scene. In 2012, it took up its abode in the former Firmenich petrochemical factory, built in 1924 on the banks of the river Arve. From the start, La Gravière has hosted live regional and international artists, famous or just making their debuts. It also organizes DJ nights featuring diverse musical genres, based on independent culture and at very reasonable prices. La Gravière's main vocation is to encourage, promote and develop culture in all its forms with pride of place given to music but with the plastic arts, cinema, theater and any kinds of sociocultural activity getting their fair share of attention as well.
A site for parties and an independent electronic music club in Carouge's industrial zone, Motel Campo is open to the public and regularly puts on concerts, dance, performances, screenings, debates, conferences and exhibitions. It offers an as eclectic as possible artistic programming that showcases local multidisciplinary creation, linking it with internationally famous artists. The venue is free and the security scarcely visible so that everyone feels comfortable.
Le Rez - Usine
A free-sounds venue ranked in 2019 by the Migros' Pour-cent culturel as one of Switzerland's five best concert halls, the Rez-Usine opens the way to various emerging genres and links brave avant-garde-ism, cathartic parties and all kinds of experiments. With an unashamed penchant for extraterrestrial sounds, its programming links the many collectives sheltering in our city and does justice to local sound submarines as well as to big shots from outside our borders. In parallel and in the purest scientific spirit, the Rez-Usine offers residencies for musical creation within its walls but also outside them, always in collaboration with other collectives and institutions.
Living memory and archives of many Usine concerts, Urgence Disk opened in March 1990 in the Usine's hideaway with a concept as yet unknown in Switzerland: it was all at once a bar, a record shop, an exhibition venue, a concert hall and a label with almost 200 releases! Since 2010, the venue has gone from a few concerts per year to 8-20 showcases per month. People attending the concerts are free to pay whatever they judge appropriate. The bar is a very low-cost service for clients that offers a selection of drinks according to the season and the barkeeper's mood.
Situated in the Usine, Geneva's alternative bastion, Le Zoo has been organizing a wide variety of quality cultural offerings in the area of electronic music for the past 20 years. With more than 100 evenings per season, the Usine's first floor has seen many DJs and international artists come and go, some of them now boasting worldwide fame. Apart from its specialized and committed programming, Le Zoo is proud of its reputation as a trailblazer. If the association has hosted numerous international DJs, it nevertheless provides a springboard for the local scene. Often equated only with its musical activity, Le Zoo is also a pioneer of VJing in Switzerland. The association has managed to stand out by specializing in this visual art that connects manipulation of images, set design and structural mapping to showcase space.
La Cave 12
The Cave 12 association dates back to January 2001; its aim is to diffuse and introduce little-known and what is considered experimental musics of all kinds (electric, acoustic, improvised, composed, electronic, etc.), that have in common their research into contemporary music. It's one of the rare Swiss structures to regularly promote this type of work and that, since its creation, has acquired solid international renown. Because of its seriousness, pertinence, high standards and intransigence, Cave 12 has become a privileged partner in Switzerland for the promotion of all types of experimental music; its programming is considered as among the most exciting and accomplished in the world.
