A Beautiful and Sad World
Landi is a family man who secretly camps alone in the Zapata marshes. His life is punctuated by hunting and listening to the radio, which reports on the pandemic and the strong social tensions in Cuba. To feed his family, he also goes crocodile hunting with his bare hands.
On the coast, his wife Mercedes searches for charcoal to cook with and looks after their son, who suffers from severe autism. She is eagerly awaiting her husband, who is due to return with provisions. A few rare days spent together in beautiful harmony, and their life resumes its cycle, marked by need and absence.
Al oeste, en Zapata is a patient, finely observed immersion into a life lived with the bare minimum, underscored by meticulous black-and-white photography that intensifies the jungle and the marshes that seem to gradually swallow up the woodsman.
