Classroom Struggles
Choo, who had left the school system, returns to her secondary school to complete her studies. Her rebellious attitude attracts the attention of three comrades with whom she forms a gang modelled on the old triads that ruled and defied colonial authority. Choo is also chosen to present the end-of-year show celebrating Singapore's birth, even though her image of the country is far removed from the official discourse...
Will she manage to reconcile her aspirations for freedom of expression and her female friendships when everything is controlled in this country? Inspired by her childhood memories, the director, whose first feature film this is, evokes an educational system that resembles a training camp and in which values such as loyalty and honor are buried under the nation's polished materialism.
Feminist, irreverent and energetic!
A round table discussion entitled “Schools, fertile ground for citizenship,” related to the films in the Struggles in the Classroom section, will take place on Monday, May 19, at 7 p.m., with Siyou Tan, director of Amoeba, in attendance.
