On Earth as in space, essential infrastructures are being destroyed by sudden strikes of mysterious origin. Could this be an alien attack? To find out for certain, the United Nations is deploying two shuttles to the Moon, the epicentre of the attacks...
By the end of the 1950s, Japan had recovered from the aftermath of the Second World War. In terms of cinema, the decade that is coming to an end revealed the great masters that are Akira Kurosawa, Yasujirō Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, and notably established Tōhō as the all-powerful production company. It also saw the emergence of a genre of cinema influenced by the trauma caused by the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima; its most famous figure is the creature Godzilla. Following the trend of monster movies, Japanese cinema is now turning its attention to space.
With Battle in Outer Space, director Ishirō Honda, creator of the original Godzilla in 1954, brought together the greatest talents of his era: screenwriter Shinichi Sekizawa, special effects supervisor Eiji Tsuburaya (co-creator of the Godzilla and Ultraman franchises) and composer Akira Ifukube.
That's what it took to save the Earth!
