Habibi Hussein

When a German NGO arrived to restore Jenin's old and
only cinema in the West Bank, Hussein Darby, the last projectionist, saw it as a rare opportunity to showcase his expertise, hoping to regain his former job. He devotes himself heart and soul to this project, rubbing shoulders with Germans and Palestinians alike, travelling the country, meeting projector collectors, oiling and repairing whatever could still be repaired…
But in the face of digitalisation and
modernisation, is there still a place for Hussein? And in the face of the self-righteous gaze of a German cultural NGO, is Hussein still of any value?

A Round table will take place on Wednesday 21 at 19:00, exploring the ways to break free from the legacy of a post colonialism attitude which last in our Western societies, echoing the film Habibi Hussein and Le Rire et le couteau.
