Classroom Struggles

Yuta and Kou are about to graduate in a futuristic Tokyo where the threat of an earthquake hangs over their daily lives. A prank with serious consequences leads to the installation of a new surveillance system. While Kou, oppressed, slowly awakens to political consciousness, Yuta remains completely carefree, and their friendship is shaken as a result.

A metaphor for a world under pressure on the brink of implosion, Happyend focuses on an age where life choices begin to be made. For these young adults in the making, school is the perfect place to have their first experiences of collegiality.

Behind the apparent rebellious comedy about learning civil disobedience, Neo Sora crafts a perfectly mastered cinematic style, made up of abrupt cuts and changes in rhythm, like a musical score with unpredictable harmonies.

The son of Japanese composer Ryūichi Sakamoto, to whom he has dedicated one documentary film, the filmmaker makes his dystopian fiction debut with Happyend, set in Tokyo in the near future.
