The Brave Ones
Mangilal is the son of a poppy farmer in an Indian province. Rather than helping his elderly mother, he prefers to rebel against corrupt officials who buy opium paste at very low prices – the equivalent of CHF 80 for six months of hard work – and spends his time on the phone, trying to rally other farmers to his cause… As the authorities gradually crack down on their family, who belong to a lower caste, the choice between working to feed themselves or rising up against systemic oppression becomes crucial.
In addition to delving into poppy cultivation, this film highlights the exploitation of poppy farmers by government-related authorities. Patiently and beautifully filmed over five years, I, Poppy explores a universal issue through the lens of an epic, intimate family saga.
A "David versus Goliath" round table discussion related to the films in the The brave ones section will take place on Thursday 22 at 7 p.m., with Vivek Chaudhary, director of I, Poppy, in attendance.
