Gross Encounters

Second Carte blanche to Gross Encounters, a film club exploring the politics of excess and low-definition in popular horror and exploitation cinema.

This edition presents a back-to-back double bill of transnational remakes: Şeytan (Turkey, 1974) and Anyab (Egypt, 1981), delightful reimaginings of The Exorcist and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. By treating the North-American canon as scrap material (ripe for looting and collage), the transnational remake becomes more than derivative. It functions as a strategy of theft and political reinvention, rooted in local economies of storytelling and figuration.

Each screening is paired with a commissioned mixtape, highlighting the soundtrack’s central role in the remake, while echoing the global circulations and economies that shaped local music industries (remixes, covers, samples, interpolations).

Contextual introductions by your devoted crypt-keepers, Reem Saleh and Noam Toran.
