Arab futuristic shorts
Duration of the programme: 81’
In cinema, there are now films that are part of the ‘Arab futurism’ phenomenon, just as there are Afrofuturist and Latin Futurist films. These works use narratives to explore the future of countries and regions often shown from a documentary perspective, rarely through the prism of genre. A sign of a future that had previously been confiscated, this revival of science fiction can also be seen as an act of resistance that refuses to accept resignation in the face of geopolitical dead ends.
Here are five short films from various sources that explore futuristic Arab themes.
In addition to the films by Maha Maamoun and Fadi Baki, there will be an emphasis on the works of Palestinian director Larissa Sansour, who already has an impressive track record in contemporary art circles.
In collaboration with the Manazir platform and the Swiss Society for the Middle East and Islamic Cultures, with the support of the Association of Art Historians.
