Peregrinations

The young Nianankoro receives the knowledge that gives him mastery of magical forces, a knowledge that is passed down from generation to generation among the Bambara. But his father finds it hard to see his son become his equal. To escape the murderous madness of his father, Nianankoro sets off across Mali to meet his uncle, who lives on the other side of the country.

An initiatory film and an enchanted travel story, Yeelen is bursting with visual ideas. These punctuate the brutal conflict between father and son and lighten its tragic tone. Through this intergenerational confrontation between sorcerers, Souleymane Cissé explores the mystery of the human being:"Why go so far as to kill one's own blood? That's what I wanted to show. Man in his progress, in his evolution, his power of intuition, his creativity, sometimes manages to undertake acts that escape him. » The result was Yeelen, that won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1987.
