Taking Root
Rita Piñero, a Rarámuri woman, is found one day in a church in a town in Kansas. At the time, nobody tried to understand her: they assumed she was from Mexico and, not knowing what to do with her, they locked her up in an insane asylum... for 12 years. Thanks to an association, she is released and money is collected for her return and maintenance in Mexico among her people, but it will be stolen.
This relentless and moving documentary retraces her life, rehabilitating the memory of this overly independent woman who was robbed of everything, and denouncing the large-scale discrimination suffered by indigenous peoples that have become very vulnerable, especially in their own country.
Discussion after the screening at MEG in the presence of the director and Beatrice Consagra Bretton, an anthropologist specialising in indigenous knowledge in Mexico.
A round table Subaltern Stories, representing Native Americans in film in the presence of the director Santiago Esteinou (director of La mujer de estrellas y montañas), Renée Nader Messora and João Salaviza (co-directors of The Buriti Flower), and moderated by Laura Flórez (researcher, specialist in audiovisual archives from conflict contexts) will be held on Thursday 25 January at 18:30 at Fonction:Cinéma.
