A father and his two children are exposed to the brutality of a megapolis that excludes them. To earn a living, he carries sandwich boards in all kinds of weather, while his children wander through garish shopping malls. In the evening, they gather around their daily meal, then enter abandoned houses to take shelter together. One day, he takes them to a river...
With hypnotic shots, Tsai Ming-Liang sculpts time and redesigns the spaces in which his characters move, like so many parallel universes. Their resistance to remain within the realm of humanity subtly reorganises the movement between the world of the living and the dead, between dream and reality. Delicate and deeply moving.
