Tatsuya Fuji in Five Films
In search of their friend kidnapped by yakuza (including Tatsuya Fuji), three high-school students face the dangers of the city. A game of hunting and hide-and-seek in this urban road movie, which magnificently captures the raw energy of youth.
The staggering performances of the young actors propel the film into a rare realm, one where the beauty of cinema meets the brutal beauty of the world. The bodies move through space in a choreography typical of young people, at once lively and poised, but always rising to confront the violence they have to face. Detached from the adult gaze, they are confronted with their own spontaneous and courageous energy.
Directed by Shinji Sōmai, a visionary director whose two masterpieces have recently been restored, and who inspired filmmakers such as Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
