Tatsuya Fuji in Five Films

For once, we present a portrait of a man of great standing in cinema, in 5 films that represent cult or singular cinematographic milestones.
In 1962, actor Tatsuya Fuji signed with Nikkatsu studios, which at the time specialised in action films, youth films and comedies. He began with small roles, but was catapulted to prominence with his performance in the cult film In the Realm of the Senses, directed by Nagisa Ōshima in 1976. Among the thirty or so films in his career are P. P. Rider by Shinji Sōmai in 1983, a filmmaker whose masterpieces have recently been restored; Bright Future by Kiyoshi Kurosawa (2002) a fantastical science fiction film which relaunches his career; Los lobos del Este, directed in 2017 by a Cuban filmmaker Carlos Quintela in Japan; finally, in 2023, Great Absence by Kei Chika-ura, a filmmaker who will be present at the festival.

From sexual vitality to the end of life, via rebellion, fatherhood and the world of work, the films selected offer a fine cinematic parable of a man's life.
