Songea, Tanzania. John Mbano must find the remains of his great-grandfather, who was executed by the German colonial army. The family's mourning has been passed down from generation to generation over his grave, in which his head has never been laid...
The head having at the time been sent to Germany for"research" purposes, John and his wife undertake the journey to Berlin. There they meet various people working on the recognition of Germany's colonial history, which is still the subject of debate. The Mbano confront senior officials of the German administration about their need to bring their ancestor home. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of hopes and disappointments. In theory, everyone agrees to return the skull and is making promises, but on the ground there are still many obstacles. The family's search continues.
