In Search of Human Rights
The notion of human rights has taken a beating. Those who defend it often come up against political obstacles, whether justified or not. The major institutions also have their work cut out for them, and seem to be part of a system inherited from the Second World War, which is now totally obsolete.
The films in this section explore situations in which rights are flouted, abused or non-existent.
22 short films brought together in From Ground Zero - I and From Ground Zero - II tell the story of Gaza since October 2023; My Stolen Planet looks back at the slow dispossession of Iranian culture; Songs of Slow Burning Earth exposes the normalization of the war in Ukraine; The Empty Grave traces the theft of Tanzanian skulls by German settlers, and finally; The New Year That Never Came goes back to 1989, in Romania, during the heckled grand finale of dictator Ceaușescu!
A round table, Showing Gaza, Agains Erasure (to be held on Monday 20 at 18:30), and an exhibition, Photo Kegham of Gaza : Unboxing, highlighting the importance of images and artists in the survival of Palestinian culture accompany the films.
